How this is made
We write this site with AI and a person edits it. We say so because a publication arguing for the sane middle on AI should show how it uses it.
The drafting
We gather sources automatically from public feeds: Australian and global mastheads, podcasts, papers and the AI labs’ own posts. A model writes the first draft. Will cuts it, checks it and signs it. We publish nothing unread.
The sourcing
Every factual claim links to where it came from. We summarise and cite other people’s articles and never reproduce them, and nothing from behind a paywall appears here. Before we publish a claim about a named person or company we check it against a primary source. If we can’t, we report the aggregate and leave the individual out.
The Index
We classify each AI story by the tone of its headline and standfirst, using a published rubric, one fixed prompt and one pinned model. Every month Will re-codes fifty stories per set blind, and we publish the agreement rate with the release. The method is versioned, and when it changes we re-run the history. We never rebuild a published number quietly. If a number changes, the release page says so and says why.
The series
Beside the Tone Index we publish a small family of recurring numbers, each on its own page with its method and its source. The AI-roles vacancy series cuts a basket of occupations we define and disclose from Jobs and Skills Australia’s Internet Vacancy Index, monthly since 2006. Hansard AI mentions counts the sections of federal Hansard that mention AI, read from the XML with one method back to 1901, and its state counterpart reads each state and territory parliament through its own machine route, with a check before every pull that the route still works. The ASX 100 AI-disclosure index reads each large company’s annual report from the company’s own archive, counts the AI mentions and codes what each one is about. Every series runs on a schedule without a person in the loop, and every method has a version. When a basket or a term list changes, the version changes and we re-run the whole history.
The pictures
Our photographs come from Unsplash through its API. We hotlink them and credit the photographer under every picture, which is what the licence asks. The Index pages carry no photography.
