AI-roles vacancy series
Online job ads for AI-capable roles in Australia, monthly since 2006.
In July 2026 there were 6,684 newly lodged online ads a month for AI-capable roles, on a three-month average, down 13.4% on a year earlier. That is 3.1% of every ad the Internet Vacancy Index counted. Index 57.2, with the 2019 average at 100. The series peaked at 19,102 in September 2007.

How we make it
We sum newly lodged online job ads across the basket's unit groups, as Jobs and Skills Australia codes them to ANZSCO at four digits, Australia-wide, each month. We show three things: the count (a three-month moving average, as JSA publishes it), the basket's share of all ads in the IVI, and an index with the 2019 average set to 100. The share and the index are the ones to compare across years, because the IVI's coverage of all vacancies has changed over time.

Read it with care
- Counts newly lodged online job ads on SEEK, CareerOne and Workforce Australia only. Ads are not vacancies, and an ad for several positions counts once.
- Four-digit data is a three-month moving average in original terms: not seasonally adjusted, not trended, and more volatile month to month.
- Occupation coding at four digits carries error that JSA says can have large impacts at this level.
- The share of all vacancies the IVI covers has moved over time (38% in 2016, 60% in 2022 and 2023, 52% in 2025), so the share of all ads and the index are safer than raw levels for long comparisons.
- ANZSCO 2013 has no unit group for data scientists or AI engineers. Those ads are coded into the basket's groups by their text, which is why the series is a basket and not an occupation.
